Papou's Hosta Collection
My name is Ghislain Séguin, 74 years old. I live in Canada half way between Ottawa and Montreal, more precisely in L'Orignal, Ontario along the Ottawa River. I have retired during 1986 after constructing my new home. In 1994 I started constructing various gardens on my one-acre parcel of land making use of conifers, flowering shrubs and ornemental trees. At that time I did not know the definition of an hosta.
During 1998 my wife, Thérèse brought home four hostas: 2 Elegans, 1 Halcyon and 1 Sun Power. I did not pay too much attention to these "new" plants until I noticed that year after year, they were emerging bigger and nicer.... and by the year 2001 I got hooked. Later on that year, I became a member of Garden Web where I have learned a great deal from good-hearted hostalovers who did not hesitate to share their knowledge and experience. The learning experience is ongoing and each time I visit the hosta forum on Garden Web, I learn something.
In 2002 I acquired 32 new hostas; 2003 ended with 101 different hosta varieties; year 2004 ended with 278 different named hostas. I kept adding new varieties during 2005 and 2006. My collection now stands at 555 different named hostas and 866 hostas surrounding our home. They are spread over 25 gardens presently.
The main purpose of this 4-year old website is to present photos of my hosta collection, and hopefully, to encourage nature loving people to start their own hosta collection. Since my collection is relatively young, it shall be interesting to follow the evolution of each hosta variety from the Sleep/Creep/Leap years (years 1/2/3) until maturity which normally will require about six years. New photos will therefore be added each year. Collecting hostas is a healthy hobby that provides me with great moments of joy, happiness and fulfillment. My passion for hostas is food for my soul and gives me a will to live longer.
Periodically, I will show my hostas in groups as they appear in my various gardens. Starting in 2007, a new topic will show a leaf closeup for each variety in my collection. This should be useful to those wishing to identify their hostas. I hope that you will enjoy your visit, and please come back at your leisure and pleasure.
